“A place you have to visit at least once in your life”
This destination may not be very well known, but it is definitely one of the most beautiful destinations in Colombia.Visited in August 2015
Located in the La Macarena mountain range, it is surrounded by breathtaking nature that has largely remained untouched by man.
Direct flights arrive from Villavicencio, Bogotá, and Medellín.
Be aware that the accommodation options are far from luxurious and come with a few limitations. There is no internet access and very limited cell phone coverage, but these are part of the site’s charm. The idea is to disconnect from the stress of everyday life and connect with nature through the world’s most beautiful river.
La Macarena was an area heavily affected by the armed conflict in Colombia, but it is now a protected area, meaning that it is completely safe to travel there. There’s even a Colombian army base nearby.
It’s a small town, but there are pharmacies, grocery stores, and clothes stores where you can easily find anything you might need for the trip while there.
The food is also rather simple but flavorful, and everyone provides excellent service to the tourists.
As for the river, there are various sections that visitors get to see. It takes approximately 8 hours to reach Caño Cristales, with a long walk required for part of the distance, but it’s completely worth it. Both the journey to get there and the destination are absolutely gorgeous.
There are also other sites that are very beautiful as well and only a short walk away such as Caño Cristalitos. These are a good option if you have some extra days.
Recommendations: take comfortable clothes that can get dirty and wet, comfortable shoes as well for crossing streams, a hat to shield you from the sun, and water. Once there, you’ll be assigned a local guide who will accompany you during the entire tour, and you’ll also be provided with lunch.
The river is very beautiful and without a doubt 100% recommended.
